Hello all
I’m looking for some guidance on my Shelsley build. Any information is greatly appreciated.
I bought a rolling chassis a few ago, done a little work on it and then it was abandoned. Anyway, my enthusiasm is reignited so i’m having another go during the four weeks Christmas holiday!
I have fitted the 2.0 turbo engine from the rover 620.
1. What driveshafts are suitable? I was hoping those from a 2.0 efi Montego/Maestro will fit.
2. As the PG1 gearbox is also used in the MGF, I assumed converting to cable change would be a simple bolt on conversion, if this isn’t the case, is there a comprehensive guide available?
3. Is cable or hydraulically operated clutch advised? From memory, the lower front engine mount fowls the slave cylinder, although I may remember this wrong. Any advise please?
Thankyou for your time
Geoff
Hello Chris
Thanks for your prompt reply. I have been looking at the pics of your car for inspiration, nice job.
I have many questions, should I continue to post on this thread?
Thanks
Hi Geoff
I have chassis No 23 which is a Mk 2 chassis.
1. I fitted the Rover 2 lt turbo engine from a Rover 820 and used 2 lt efi maestro/montego drive shafts with no problems or modifications.
2. I have converted my gearbox to cable change using mgf gear change and cables. You need the cable brackets for gearbox for ease of fitment, they require slight spacing for alignment.
3. I have got hydraulically operated clutch, used the slave cylinder from the Rover and cut away engine bracket to suit and fitted a master cylinder from Car Builder Solutions.
4. I’m trying to keep a register of Shelsley owners and I don’t seem to have you on the list. Which chassis no do you have and is it a Mk 1 or Mk 2. Please could you forward details to be added to the list.
Sorry I have taken a long time to reply to your enquiry.
Regards
Paul
Hello Paul. Thank you for your helpful reply. I don’t know the chassis number off the top of my head but I think I remember being told it is an early one so probably a mark 1. I will let you know.
I would like to see pics of a mark 2 for comparison , perhaps you could direct me to some?
I have been trying to purchase the gearbox selector cable brackets but everyone seems only to want to supply a complete box.
I intend on uploading some pics of the build, I will notify u boys when I do.
Cheers
Hi Geoff
The driveshafts from 2.0 efi Montegro/Maestro are good
Fit cable gear change – takes up less space and is smoother Use the mounting plates and attachments from MGF
Use hydraulic clutch operation easier I used a ‘Pull’ slave cylinder and mounted a master cylinder at the clutch pedal all buying from off the shelf
I have pictures of the clutch set up I can send
Yet to convert the gear change but I have the bits and Alan has his working all Ok

HI Geoff,
Great to hear you are enthused again!
1) yes they should but some are slightly different lengths and maybe too short – unfortunately you won’t know this until after you’ve fitted them
2) Yes, there’s a little jiggery pokery but simple enough – also look at the lotus elise cable change
3) I’ve got cable on mine and its a pain in the rear, the hydraulic is interchangeable but you will have to fabricate something at the pedals – I believe you also need to make sure you have the right forks & clutch arm
I’m sure others (with hydraulic) will be along at some point to add/comment
